Windows 7 has been officially out for a few days now and comments on it are mixed. Nightmare upgrades of current Vista Operating systems are rampant and as yet unresolved. Those having issues are reporting complete loss of the operating system and without a backup plan a loss of their data. This just goes to show the only way to install a new operating System is a clean install. That said now to the meat and potatoes.

Windows 7 is built on the Vista core, that means is shares all the pluses and minuses of Vista. It is a resource hog. It looks like, acts like and works like Vista. Removing the badge from the Windows Start Menu would make it difficult if not impossible to distinguish it from Vista.

There are some improvements although they are minimal and speed increases being reported vary widely. My system going from XP Pro to Win7 showed XP to be significantly faster and performance was better. Going from Vista  Pro to Win 7 Pro showed maybe a 4 second decrease in boot time. So performance wise you gain nothing.

I have noticed that occasionally Win7 busies itself and slows to a crawl, almost acts like it’s locked up. It does return to normal operations after a few seconds. I have no idea what that’s about but surely an explanation will surface. It can be crashed easily by a novice computer user.

Windows 7 has the ability to run XP programs in a virtual machine mode. Simply that means a computer inside another computer. This option should be reserved for advanced users only.

Performance is far from impressive even on a quad core computer with lots of ram using the 64 bit version. Get as much ram as you can afford (your version can use) and the fastest cpu are a must. AND Yes you can put it on an older computer but don’t expect it to be blazingly fast. The older , the slower,

Looks like we are stuck with it, did I mention the menu system STINKS big. Well, that’s my opinion for now, a few service packs from now and we will know what we have. A diamond in the rough or a silk purse turned into a sows ear.

For those of you who just like to argue, don’t bother sending email, I won’t read it. My concern is my customers not a boat rockers opinion. If it works great, good, if it’s a pig...to bad.

Finally, if it wasn’t for Microsoft likely you would not be reading this article nor constructing your projects on a pc. While Microsoft has screwed up a few times, their products do work. Sometimes better then others and other times worse then others.

Clients whom have purchased notebooks on Black Friday are reporting unexplained reboots and system blue screens along with mysterious hard drive activity. Others report some of their peripherals not working and a few with some programs not liked by Win 7(this is to be expected). Bad Hardware? Incompatible drivers? Incompatible programs? Guess we will see.
